What it is: A nomination is permission or invitation from a State or Territory government that allows you to apply for the subclass 190 (permanent) or subclass 491 (provisional regional) visa. States and Territories receive a fixed number of nominations each program year and use those places to meet local workforce and demographic needs.

Two-step pathway: first you must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect and apply to a state/territory for nomination; if the state nominates you, you then lodge the visa application to the Department of Home Affairs.

Designated Area Representative (DAR): the regional authority that negotiates and administers the DAMA.
Employers: must be endorsed by the DAR before nominating overseas workers.
Workers: must meet the DAMA‑specific nomination and visa conditions once an employer is endorsed.

Typical concessions and occupation scope

Occupation lists: DAMAs can include occupations not available under national skilled lists, tailored to local industry needs.
