From Student Visa to Permanent Residency

Part 1: The Student Stage

For many people, the journey to Australia begins with a student visa. It is often seen as the first step toward gaining qualifications, developing skills, and eventually becoming eligible for a skilled visa.

But is applying for a student visa always the best pathway? Not necessarily.

The student visa system has changed dramatically. What worked 2 or 3  years ago no longer works today. Understanding these changes is essential before you invest time, money, and your future into a study pathway.

  1. Is a Student Visa the Right First Step for You?

A student visa is not automatically the best option. It requires:

  • Strong financial capacity
  • A suitable and credible study program
  • Clear evidence of genuine temporary intent
  • A long‑term career plan aligned with Australia’s skilled occupation lists

The days of enrolling in a cheap vocational course, working full‑time, and “hopping” from one course to another are over. The Department has clamped down on this behaviour, and refusal rates have increased sharply.

  1. The Problem With “Dead‑End” Courses

Many applicants choose business, leadership, or generic vocational courses simply because they are affordable. They study for a year, then switch to another similar course, hoping to stay longer and save money.

This strategy often leads to a dead end.

Why? Because these courses do not lead to occupations on the skilled migration lists. After years of study and thousands of dollars spent, the applicant discovers they have no pathway to permanent residency.

In many cases, this happens because their migration agent:

  • Only focused on charging a fee for the visa,
  • received a substantial referral commission from the school,
  • and never planned a long‑term migration pathway.

This is a serious conflict of interest — and it leaves the student stuck.

  1. How Chess Migration Approaches Your Study Pathway

At Chess Migration, we do not simply enrol you in a course. We evaluate your entire vocational pathway, including:

  • whether it is better to study in your home country first,
  • whether your proposed occupation requires registration or licensing,
  • whether work experience can substitute for qualifications,
  • whether your chosen occupation is stable on the skilled lists,
  • whether your financial capacity supports study in Australia.

Studying in your home country may be better if:

  • you need affordable education,
  • you want to stay close to family,
  • you lack the financial capacity to study in Australia
  • you want to save money for future visa costs.

Studying in Australia may be better if:

  • your occupation favours Australian qualifications,
  • you want access to post‑study work visas,
  • you want your family to join you,
  • you want an early and clear pathway to permanent residency,
  • you can demonstrate strong financial capacity and genuine temporary intent.
  1. Choosing the Right Study Course

Australia has hundreds of occupations across multiple skilled lists. Some occupations appear today and disappear tomorrow. Others — such as medical, construction, engineering— have been on the lists for decades and are unlikely to change.

Some occupations are not on the occupations list; however, are part of a labour agreement.

You must choose a course that:

  • leads to a real occupation,
  • is on a relevant skilled list or labour agreement,
  • you align with and will enjoy,
  • offers employment opportunities,
  • aligns with your long‑term migration plan.

A poor course choice can cost you years of your life.

  1. Planning for Permanent Residency Starts Now

Our consultations are designed to plan every step of your migration journey:

  • study pathway
  • work experience
  • skills assessment
  • licensing or registration
  • post‑study visa options
  • employer sponsorship
  • permanent residency

For some occupations, work experience can replace formal qualifications. For others, registration is mandatory, and your study must meet strict criteria.

Sometimes your situation allows you to study in Australia. Sometimes it does not. Our job is to tell you the truth — and build the right plan.
